At the moment Šeštokai cargo transshipment station is of low capacity. While European railway lines do not reach Kaunas city, the only solution for cargo conveyance to Europe is via Mockava railway station.
Šeštokai cargo transshipment station is an exclusive place which has a competitive advantage in the First North – South transportation passage. However, it has already exceeded ultimate capacity and in order to pursue further quality operations it needs expansion.
Among the important factors determining the success of the project we should mention convenient location (First North – South transportation passage, Via Baltica highway) of the Šeštokai railway station and a number of companies that are willing to invest in terminal constructions.
The implementation of the project will open the following possibilities:
• Creation of new workplaces
• Attraction of structural investments
• Obtaining a perspective position in European transport and logistic business.
It is forecasted that the flow of cargo will increase up to 1 mln. tons per year including temporary storage up to 3 days. It is necessary to build 5500 sq. m. covered warehouses, a covered ramp of 8500 sq. m. and a container loading area of 9500 sq. m. All in all 23500 sq. m. of covered warehouses are planned to be built.
Currently average cargo is about 70 loaded wagons per day. Cargo is transshipped into other wagons. This work is done by 5 workers: 1 crane attendant and 4 slingers. 5 workers are capable of reloading 5 to 7 wagons per day.
Compared to other custom warehouses and the quantity of workers, it can be forecasted that at least 100 workers will be employed including crane attendants, slingers, wheel-loader drivers, store men, security guards, custom agents, IT specialists, shipping-agents and others.
Due to the project other companies such as transport shipping agents, trading companies’ agents, wood recast companies and others will be located near the terminal.
To sum up, enlarging the terminal will guarantee 1,5-2 mln. tones of reloaded cargo per year and five to seven hundred new workplaces.
